Sun + Earth Certified: What it is and why you should care

14 Jan

Big changes are upon us in the cannabis community, and with all big change comes big opportunity. What sorts of big opportunities await for us? Safe, diversified cannabis farming that supports the earth, the farmer and the community. But how do you know your cannabis is coming from a farm that really cares about ‘tegrity’? Look for the Sun and Earth logo to lead you to cannabis grown by farmers seeking to do just this: produce sungrown, environmentally responsible cannabis grown on diversified farms.

What is Sun and Earth?

Sun + Earth was founded to recognize a process of cannabis cultivation that supports the earth, the farmer and the community. The following description was pulled directly from the Sun+Earth website, it includes Earth Care and Cultivation, Human Empowerment and Community Engagement.

Earth Care and Cultivation

These standards represent an evolution beyond organic by embracing the concept of regeneration. For crop production, this means building soil quality through mulching, crop rotation, and reduced tillage. The cannabis farm envisioned through these standards might use mulch to reduce weed pressure, conserve soil moisture, enhance habitat for beneficial soil flora and fauna, increase organic matter while also inter-planting potatoes, lettuce, and marigolds within rows of cannabis. The farmer would be boosting soil fertility on the farm through the strategic use of cover crops, compost, compost teas, and homemade plant ferments derived from local resources.

Human Empowerment

In addition to regenerative farming practices, these standards also attempt to address the rights of farm workers, who as a social group within agriculture have long been exploited and marginalized. Current organic standards don’t deal with worker rights, but if a farmer wants to describe their farm as regenerative, shouldn’t farm workers also be treated fairly? Regenerative farming is intended to renew the ecosystem and people—this means caring for farm workers.

Community Engagement

Finally, the standards include language that requires the farm to engage their local community with greater focus and intention. This community piece is far outside the realm of existing organic certifications and represents fertile ground worthy of exploration. Building soil has been seen as a vital activity of an organic farm yet a truly regenerative farm also realizes building community is just as essential.

Who is behind the Sun+Earth movement?

The Sun+Earth movement began with trial testing in the summer of 2018. During the summer and fall, farms were evaluated through the newly developed standard to check feasibility and achievability of the standard on 14 existing diversified cannabis farms. The Board representing the certification is currently made up of two cannabis farmers, and representatives from The Cannabis Conservancy, The International Cannabis Farmers Alliance, Flow Kana, Certified Kind and Dr. Bronners. The Bronners have been a key player in the creation and implementation of the certification. As the movement has grown, alliances have been made all across the cannabis community. They have helped this idea grow to become a leading third party verification that recognizes cannabis farmers going above and beyond to produce quality medicine.

Why should you care?

The last thing our planet needs is another industrialized monocrop industry. With legalization comes a risk that this could happen to cannabis, just like almost every other agricultural product. Farmers, entrepreneurs, politicians, and cannabis enthusiasts are determined to prevent that from happening. Together, we imagine a future for cannabis that is grown on diversified farms, managed by families who are paid fairly, in communities that support the health and longevity of the planet, the animals and the people. Come support us in this vision to grow wholesome cannabis, under the sun, in the earth, for generations to come. We appreciate this shared passion and hope to be able to co-create this with you and your communities support.
